Breeze DSLR Remote Pro 3.18.2.1 & Photo Booth Expo

DSLR Remote Pro 3.18.2.1 release

DSLR Remote Pro 3.18.2.1 was released today, March 9th. This is a minor update, fixing issues in DSLR Remote Pro 3.18.2 where touchscreen keyboards converted all input to upper case and the program could crash when using SHIFT+Ctrl+left click to save the keyboard settings.

Photo Booth Expo 2023

2023 was our busiest Expo for years. Breeze, EventKite and Everybooth shared a stand showcasing Breeze for Windows and Breeze for iPad running on Everybooth’s lovely wooden booths. Images were uploaded to EventKite’s new  microsite and gallery.

Visitors loved  the black and white video and photos taken by DLSR Remote Pro, and were astonished by the power and speed of Breeze for iPad 3.3.

Breeze for iPads’ ability to offer built in background removal  with live view for both video and photos was a hit, as was the ability to pair the iPad with Canons’ mirrorless and DSLR cameras.

Thanks Grecia for sharing this image

Sharp eyed visitors may have noticed that overlays on both the DSLR Remote Pro and Breeze for iPad images vary, sharing prime position between the three businesses on the stand. Both Breeze for iPad and DSLR Remote Pro include the ability to randomly vary layouts.

It was a joy for Chris and I to work with Peter Leese, Susie Huges, Steve Bliesner, Owen McCrick and Ken Oelschläger on a very busy stand. Thank you all!

Reminders: Breeze apps require Intel Processors & End of support for 8.1

Important reminders for anyone choosing a new computer, or running machines with old versions of Windows.

ARM Processors

When choosing new computers to run Breeze Windows progams take care to choose models with Intel processors.

Some recent Windows computers (including the Microsoft Surface Pro X) use the new ARM processors. Breeze apps are designed for Intel processors and will not run on ARM processors.

More about choosing a photo booth computer to run Breeze

End of support for Windows 8.1

You may know that Microsoft will end Extended Support for Windows 8.1 on January 10 2023. Microsoft support for Windows 8 ended back in 2016.

Breeze are no longer able to provide support for Windows 8, and will end support for our software running on Windows 8.1 on January 10th 2023.

When Microsoft end support for a version of their operating system, we can no longer test or support our products on this operating system safely.

If you are still running Breeze programs on Windows 8 or 8.1 we strongly recommend you upgrade to Windows 11 as soon as possible.

I’m still running Breeze on Windows 8.1, will the program stop working on January 10th?

If you are already running a Breeze program on Windows 8.1 or Windows 8, we don’t expect it to stop working. However we recommend you upgrade your operating system to Windows 11 as soon as possible. Take a copy of both registration name and code, and deactivate the license before you start in case of problems.

Which versions of Windows will you support after January 11th?

From January 11th we will support Intel processors running Windows 11 and 10 (not Windows 11 S or 10 S).

Can I still upgrade my old Breeze license?

Any customer with a valid license for a current Breeze product can buy an upgrade license. All our Windows products include at least one year of free upgrades from the date the license was issued.

Webcam 2.6 adds touch free operation

Breeze Booth (Webcam+Windows) 2.6 aka Webcam Photobooth was released today.

This release adds QR code based touch free operation and sharing, and support for the latest email security protocols

What do I get from Webcam 2.6?

  • Better guest experience
  • Hands free operation
  • Faster, touch free sharing
  • Less waiting in line
  • Contactless data collection
  • Pre registration and data collection support
  • Support for Gmail authentication
  • Support for Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.2

Touch free booth control

Offer your clients totally hands free operation and a better guest experience with contactless data collection, touchless start, and fast hygenic  sharing.

Fast touch free emails and texts

Guests type their email address or cell phone number once into their smart phone,  generating  a unique QR code they use to power the booth and send emails and texts. Fast, simple, hygenic.  Genuine contactless booth operation.

Touch free links to your online gallery

Turning the QR code concept on it’s head, you can also display a QR code on your sharing screen for guests to scan with their smart phone. Use this to direct guests to your online gallery for immediate social sharing.

What is Gmail Authentication and how can it affect me?

Google changed the requirements for authenticating Gmail emails in 2020.  Gmail users now need to  ‘authenticate’ ie approve third party applications which send emails from their gmail accounts.

Adding support for Gmail Authentication to Webcam Photobooth means you can use Gmail to share photos from the booth. More

What is Transport Layer Security and how might it affect me?

You may be familiar with Gmail authentication, but it’s quite likely you never heard of Transport Layer Security (TLS) before.

Transport Layer Security (TLS) is a protocol used to send communications securely over computer networks. Many ISPs send emails using simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP), and SMTP emails use transport layer security (TLS).

A growing number of ISPs require TLS version 1.2, so we have added support for this to Webcam  2.6

By adding support for TLS 1.2 to Webcam 2.6, emails from the booth still work as and when your ISP decides it’s a requirement.

Note TLS 1.2 is also supported in DSLR Remote Pro, Kiosk and Hub. More

Try Webcam Photobooth 2.6 for yourself

Webcam Photobooth 2.6 is a free upgrade for all registered users who purchased Webcam Photobooth after 1st July 2021. Customers with older licenses need to buy an upgrade license to use this release.

Connecting Canon cameras to Breeze Booth for iPad

Update 2023: Breeze Booth for iPad 3.2 enabled direct USB connection between iPads /iPhones and Canon cameras. This is a free upgrade, and makes the method below redundant for most users. Learn how to connect iPads and iPhones to a camera with a USB cable  here

Breeze Booth for iPad 2.0 let you choose whether to use the iPad’s built in camera, or a separate Canon camera.

What do I get from the extra camera?

Running an iPad booth with a separate Canon DSLR or Mirrorless camera gives you

  • appeal to discerning customers looking for quality
  • better image quality
  • ability to use flash instead of ambient lighting
  • less obtrusive lighting when the booth is not active

Breeze Booth for iPad works in both landscape and portrait. The external camera makes it easier to shoot in landscape, because you can place the camera above the center of the screen.

Which cameras can I use?

You can use most Canon EOS DSLRs , the M50 Mk II and  M50, M200 and M6 Mark II. Breeze for iPad also supports Canon’s PowerShot SX70 HS, G5 X Mark II & G7 X Mark III – that’s every camera supported by DSLR Remote Pro 3.15.5. Full list

Hot tip: Chris ‘s pick is the EOS M50 Mk II or original EOS M50. Both have excellent autofocus and face detect, and are very compact.

What else do I need?

You need external control software connected to the camera by USB and iPad using WiFi or a wired connection. The controller can run on a Windows 10  device  or Raspberry Pi.

Breeze provide the camera control software at no extra cost to Breeze Booth for iPad customers.

Mini Windows PC running the camera controller for Breeze Booth 2.0

Raspberry Pi running the camera controller

Flash is recommended for still photos.

Which is best – Windows or Raspberry Pi?

  • Windows devices are simpler to set up than a Raspberry Pi
  • Our Windows controller can also monitor and control the iPad
  • The Raspberry Pi is compact and require little or no maintenance once it has been set up.
  • Windows devices support virtually all printers, and are much more reliable than AirPrint

Controlling the external camera with a Windows device

A Windows compute stick,  mini computer or budget Windows tablet costing around US $100 to US $150* is fine. You need

  • USB port for the camera
  • Second USB port if you plan to print
  • Ability to power the device and connect to the camera/printer at the same time
  • Sufficient memory to run Windows 10.

Download Breeze Booth for iPad Camera Controller bundled with the other Windows Companion Apps here

What about Windows updates?

Windows 10 updates can be switched off while the booth is in use.

Controlling the external camera with a Raspberry Pi

You will need a Raspberry Pi Model B with 2GB or more of memory and a 8GB micro SD card.

Note: Setting up a Pi based controller is  recommended only for  more technical users. More

How easy is it to switch between the iPad camera and a external camera?

Once you have set up the controller and switched on your camera,  toggle a switch on the iPad App  to switch between the iPad’s internal camera and your external camera.
