Breeze for iPad Blend Modes

Breeze Blend Modes can be used creatively to achieve many different effects.

Booth (iPad+iPhone) includes normal, lighten, darken, overlay, screen, hard light, soft light, multiply, difference, exclusion, color dodge, color burn, hue, saturation, color and luminosity blend modes.

Breeze Booth blend example Lighten blend

Original [left] and Lighten blend overlay applied [right]

Depending on the effect you want to achieve, you can use two methods to apply these blends

  • Overlay blend mode – blend the overlay with the print or GIF layout
  • Photo blend mode – blend individual photos with the print layout behind the photo.

Overlay blend modes

Here print , slideshow GIF or burst GIF overlay(s) are blended with the print or GIF layout

  • Open your event in the Event Editor
  • Open the Print Layout Editor from the Photos tab
  • Import your overlay (overlay.png) into the Print Layout Editor
  • Select the overlay blend mode in the Photos tab
  • Save your changes

To use slideshow GIF overlay blends

  • Place your overlay (slideshow_gif_overlay.png or slideshow_gif_overlay_1.png, slideshow_gif_overlay_2.png etc) into the Screens folder
  • Open your event in the Event Editor
  • Select the overlay blend mode in the Slideshow GIFs tab
  • Save your changes

To use Burst GIF overlay blends

  • Place your overlay (gif_overlay.png or gif_overlay_1.png, gif_overlay_2.png etc.) into the Screens folder
  • Open your event in the Event Editor
  • Select the overlay blend mode in the Burst GIFs tab
  • Save your changes

Photo blend modes (prints only)

Photo blends can be used for more complex effects.

Use photo blends to

  • apply different blend modes to each image on a print
  • layer the effects of different blends
  • blend two or more photos together
  • combine blends with other print compositing effects
Overlay blend + color wash & contrast adjustment (Breeze for iPad Print Compositing)

Overlay and logos can also be placed over blended photos.

Individual photo blends are applied to everything behind that photo – including parts of any other photos, logos and background it overlaps.

To use photo overlay blends

  • Open your event in the Event Editor
  • Open the Print Layout Editor from the Photos tab
  • Select an image you want to blend, and right click anywhere on this image
  • Choose Edit photo position and effects…
  • Select the blend mode from the drop down list
  • Save your changes

Combining  blend modes with AI background removal

Blend modes often work best when used with AI background removal so that they only apply to people in the photo and not the background.

Choosing a blend mode

Booth (iPad+iPhone) includes normal, lighten, darken, overlay, screen, hard light, soft light, multiply, difference, exclusion, color dodge, color burn, hue, saturation, color and luminosity blend modes.

Blend modes can be used to achieve many different effects, and detailed descriptions of each are beyond the scope of this post.

This wikipedia article is a useful source of information: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blend_modes.  Online videos about Photoshop blend modes may also be helpful.

Note: When experimenting with blend modes the free version’s 10 sessions/day limit before adding a watermark may prove frustrating. Please email me (sales@breezesys.com) if you would like a short term Breeze Booth for iPad license to try Breeze blend modes.

Connecting Canon cameras to Booth (iPad+iPhone)

Breeze Booth (iPad+iPhone) can shoot photos, GIFs and video with  external Canon cameras, as well as the front and rear cameras built into the device.

I have just published a new tutorial explaining how to connect your camera to the iPad/iPhone using a couple of cables and a USB hub with a charging port.

The charging port is needed to charge the device and connect to the camera at the same time.

Which cameras can I use?

All the Canon cameras commonly used in the photo booth industry. Choose from the huge range of Canon EOS R series, M series, DSLR and PowerShot cameras here: Full list

How easy is it to switch between the iPad camera and a external camera?

Very simple. You switch between internal and external camera in the Breeze Booth app.

Where’s this tutorial?

You can find the tutorial here

Breeze DSLR Remote Pro 3.18.2.1 & Photo Booth Expo

DSLR Remote Pro 3.18.2.1 release

DSLR Remote Pro 3.18.2.1 was released today, March 9th. This is a minor update, fixing issues in DSLR Remote Pro 3.18.2 where touchscreen keyboards converted all input to upper case and the program could crash when using SHIFT+Ctrl+left click to save the keyboard settings.

Photo Booth Expo 2023

2023 was our busiest Expo for years. Breeze, EventKite and Everybooth shared a stand showcasing Breeze for Windows and Breeze for iPad running on Everybooth’s lovely wooden booths. Images were uploaded to EventKite’s new  microsite and gallery.

Visitors loved  the black and white video and photos taken by DLSR Remote Pro, and were astonished by the power and speed of Breeze for iPad 3.3.

Breeze DSLR Remote Pro 3.18.2 using Canon EOS M50 Mk II

Breeze for iPads’ ability to offer built in background removal  with live view for both video and photos was a hit, as was the ability to pair the iPad with Canons’ mirrorless and DSLR cameras.

Grecia Ventura and Mai Trabue trying Breeze Booth for iPad 3.3

Thanks Grecia for sharing this image

Sharp eyed visitors may have noticed that overlays on both the DSLR Remote Pro and Breeze for iPad images vary, sharing prime position between the three businesses on the stand. Both Breeze for iPad and DSLR Remote Pro include the ability to randomly vary layouts.

Upgrade to DSLR Remote Pro 3.18.2.1 today

DSLR Remote Pro 3.18.2 is a free upgrade for all registered users who purchased DSLR Remote Pro after 9 March 2022. Customers with older licenses need to buy an upgrade license to use this release.

It was a joy for Chris and I to work with Peter Leese, Susie Huges, Steve Bliesner, Owen McCrick and Ken Oelschläger on a very busy stand. Thank you all!

Thanks as well to Steve for his stunning interfaces which showcased both apps and booths to perfection, and to Grecia Ventura for kindly allowing us to use her photos.

Replacing a computer running DSLR Remote Pro

Is it time to replace the computer you use to run DSLR Remote Pro?

Check out these two guides before you start

Choosing a computer for your booth

Breeze Booth (DSLR+Windows) aka DSLR Remote Pro is very efficient, and often runs well on lowered powered devices than apps from other suppliers.

Before getting out your wallet, think about the ways your booth will be used, because this will affect the spec and cost of the computer you need.

  • Do you simply shoot still photos for social events?
  • Will you shoot burst GIFs or video?
  • What about about slow mo and video FX?
  • Will you use filters, background removal or other effects?
  • Do you require lightening fast results, or is a short delay before viewing the images unimportant?

When you are clear about the the services you will offer, Choosing the right computer for your booth helps you find the computer spec which meets your needs.

Making the move

Once you have obtained your new computer, you need to move DSLR Remote Pro from your old machine to the replacement.

Moving Breeze DSLR Remote Pro to a new computer will guide you through this process.

Redwoods

Chris and I had a blast in Las Vegas at Booth Mastermind and Photo Booth Expo. It was great to catch up with many of you after three years away.

We are taking a vacation driving part of the Pacific Coast Highway before heading back to the UK on Friday.

We have fallen in love with the laid back sea otters

Many of the Californian state parks along Pacific Coast Highway are closed after the recent storms, but we managed to see the awesome redwoods at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Learning more about these giants was a reminder of National Geographic’s award winning Climbing Redwood Giants (which just happened to use Breeze Multi-Camera)

Once we get home Chris will put the final touches to Breeze Booth for iPad 3.3, which we previewed on the stand at PBX, then move on to the next release of Breeze Booth (DSLR+Windows).
